René Magritte
René Magritte, 1898-1967
Belgian painter
The great Belgian figurative surrealist painter René Magritte is best known for his banal, representational but illusionistic paintings, in which nothing can be taken for granted: a style associated with magic realism and surrealism.
Aside from a brief 3-year stay in Paris, Rene Magritte spent a discreet industrious life in Brussel, painting the impossible with calm, confident conviction.
René Magritte's influence on surrealism, as well as later avantgarde schools such as pop-art, has been substantial.
