Asger Jorn
Asger Jorn, 1914-1973
Danish painter
He changed his name from Asger Olug Jörgensen to Asger Jorn in 1945.
Asger Jorn began seeking his inspiration beyond the boundaries of his own country and it was during these travels through Tunesia, France, Lapland and the Netherlands that he came into contact with the artists Constant Permeke and Karel Appel.
Together with Constant Permeke and Christian Dotremont on the 8th of November 1948, Asger Jorn formed the theorethical group of CoBrA in which he is considered to be the driving force.
Of all artists associated with Cobra, Asger Jorn was the undisputed master of ceramics, with Picasso serving as a major inspiration. Shortly before the end of the CoBrA movement in 1951, Asger Jorn caught tuberculosis and spent many months in a sanatorium recovering.
