Corneille

Corneille, 1922

Belgian painter

Corneille was born in 1922 in Liège, of Dutch parents.

Corneille, whose full name is Guillaume Corneille van Beverloo, uses his second name because he thougt it too pretentious to sign his work with his surname. In French, the name Corneille means Cornelis (crow), which probably explains the link between his work and birds.

He himself always says that his movements on the canvas always turn in to birds, that the bird is the perfect image of movement, that it is not just the movement extending beyond the painting that is important but also the joy and the movement itself.
