Karel Appel, 1921-2006

Dutch painter and sculptor

In July 1948, Karel Appel founded the Experimental Group in the Netherlands, along with Constant de Corneille. In November of the same year, he was one of the founders of the internatinal Cobra Movement that was set up in Paris.

The Cobra Movement was an event of some influence for the Netherlands. The whole experimental movement, both for artists and poets, was the cause of a genuine revolution in plastic arts and literature.

Karel Appel was undoubtedly the most important member of Cobra in the Netherlands, which also had to do with his spectacular appearance.
